SRU Coaching Conference 2015

During this World Cup Year another successful Coaching Conference was held at our new

Venue – Saint Bedes School, Rugeley on Sunday, 5th July.

The Conference was officially opened by the great former All Black player Zinzan Brook who gave an insight into why the All Blacks are so successful with their National Team – their main focus being on concentrated skill levels and intensity.

Zinzan also expressed the opinion that it was not a good idea to seed teams so far in advance of the World Cup resulting in the ‘Group of Death’ for England, Australia and Wales. He congratulated Staffordshire for having an international theme to our Conference with he as a New Zealander, together with Henrique Rocha and Joao Luis Pinto. National Coaches from Portugal.

In the morning Henrique presented an intense scrummaging practice session using elasticated harnesses. He had developed these practices to suit the Portugese pack which is small in stature compared to other countries.

In the afternoon Joao Luis Pinto concentrated on back play, unfortunately the weather cut this short and a question and answer session was held in the gym. This is where the Staffordshire Referees Society trainer – Mark Liddell made a great contribution for which the Coaching Society was grateful.

The Coaching Society are grateful for the co-operation from two clubs - Rugeley RFC who provided a set of forwards and Willenhall RFC who sent their under l5’s for the coaches to work with.

As in previous years the number of coaches attending was excellent, but again these only represented a small number out of the 28 clubs in Staffordshire.

Saint Bedes proved to be an excellent venue and will be an asset in the future.

The two Portugese coaches worked within Staffordshire and Cheshire for the remainder of the week and proved very popular with everyone.
